I had a beautiful realization when my daughters’ surf instructor responded to my question. I had asked her what she liked the most about surfing. Her reply was so simple… yet profound.
“It teaches you to ride the wave. I see people all the time trying to fight mother nature. They see big waves coming and they want to fight it. Surfing isn’t about fighting the waves, it’s about riding the waves. You’ve got to know when to lay low and let a wave pass. If not, you’d be catching your breath and the perfect wave will pass you by! You’ve just gotta lay low, let the bigger waves pass, and come up… so you can ride the wave that’s right for you”.
I realized I have been fighting the waves lately. I have been over-using my fighting spirit under the guise of “not wanting to give up”. I am trying to push through situations that probably just require me to lay low. No wonder, I feel tired and exhausted. I realized that quitting would mean that I get off the surfboard and never get back on it again. Laying low would mean showing the patience to go with the flow, knowing well that the ocean isn’t going to run out of waves…and my wave might be just around the corner. I’d love to ride the waves and not fight them. What about you?
