Have trouble picking up that task that you really know needs to be done? And after pushing it for the 11th time, you just conclude that you are lazy and just lack the discipline needed to get it done.
Procrastination is often a result of perfectionism. Perfectionists hold themselves to incredibly high standards and since they are putting such pressure on themselves, they often won’t start a project because they know they can’t do it perfectly. They know just how much energy it will take to do the task perfectly that they are often exhausted even before they begin.
So what’s one way to deal with it? I often tell my daughters that if what they have at hand is important, do a poor job of it…now. It seems counter-intuitive but doing a “poor job” is a lot better than pursuing doing an excellent job that may never happen. Once they have their “poor” version ready, they can always iterate on it and make it better if they have the time.
